Kraków—a city with county rights in southern Poland, the seat of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, and the country’s second-largest city in terms of both population and area. The Kraków Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,468,427. It is situated on the Vistula River, within the Kraków Gate, the Nidzia Basin, and the Western Beskid Foothills. It is one of Poland’s oldest cities, with a history spanning over a thousand years; it boasts valuable architectural landmarks and is home to numerous cultural institutions and facilities housing priceless historical artifacts. Until 1795, Kraków was formally the capital of Poland, and until 1611, it served as the seat of Polish rulers. From 1596 to 1795—that is, until the Third Partition of Poland—as the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it shared its capital functions with Warsaw, which became the king’s residential city.
Today, it is the capital of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and the central metropolitan hub of the Kraków metropolitan area. In historical records, it is recognized as the principal city of historic Lesser Poland. Kraków’s historical function is reflected in its full official name — the Royal Capital City of Kraków — legally sanctioned by the Council of Ministers as well as, previously, by the supreme state authorities of the Second Polish Republic, which used this name in their legal documents.
